Central Market

Visit the Central Market of Valencia to enjoy traditional food of the city and wonder at its architectural design.

The Central Market, or the “Mercado Central”, is another important monument of Valencia. It is used daily as a center to vend different types of food; for this reason many restaurants in Valencia typically buy their ingredients here. The Central Market’s construction began in 1914 and is a reflection of the modernist design of that era. Its architects were Francesc i Guardia Vial and Alexandre Soler i March who both came from the School of Architecture in Barcelona and were clearly influenced by Domènech i Montaner.

Central Market is constructed of metal and glass. It hails a gothic touch but follows the modernist design. The roof of the center building blends exceptionally well with nearby building, which is the Silk Market (“Lonja de la Seda”). In 2004, Horacio Fernández del Castillo was in charge of the market’s restoration. Through a complete renovation, its facilities and functions have been modernize.
