The Botanical Garden of the University of Valencia was first founded in 1567. In its first 200 years it was a garden of plants linked to medical studies.
Until the Nineteenth Century, the Botanical Garden was located in various sites of Valencia. It was only in 1802 when the University of Valencia placed it definitively in the Tramoyeres Garden, outside the walls of the city near San Sebastian Convent and Quart Towers.
Throughout the Nineteenth Century botany classes were held for the acclimatization of agricultural plants. In the Twentieth Century the Botanical Garden was abandoned up until 1987, when the University of Valencia designed a restoration process that ended in 2000.
Nowadays, the Botanical Garden is one of the main gardens of Valencia. It is dedicated to the investigation of plant diversity and the conservation of endemic and threatened species of Mediterranean flora. It also hosts special educational and cultural activities.
